We're Getting a Fresh Title in the Greatest Star Wars Series in History, Directed by a Mass Effect Veteran.
The galaxy far, far away fans have no shortage of choices when it comes to stellar interactive experiences wielding the iconic energy blades, but the universe imagined by George Lucas is more than a arena for combat. Few series have grasped this better than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the old-school computer role-playing game tradition that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after a number of fits and starts, The Game Awards has unveiled that players will soon be able to experience a thematic heir to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Big Reveal
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is touted as "a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our ambitions are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an chance to delve into a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an all-new story tailored specifically to fulfill the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
A Welcome Surprise
The reveal is something of a shock, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, reports had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been under development as recently as March 2025.
Here is the summary for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
Why KOTOR Matters
The iconic role-playing games, which have recently been ported to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their dialogue-heavy, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they inadvertently codified how people picture the Old Republic age as a whole, to this day. The games dared to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often considered unquestionable, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are true. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a considerably bleaker direction by asking if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans decades after their release, but the follow-up in particular is argued to be as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media created.
A New Hope
And now, four years after seeing a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the similar spirit. Given the appetite for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a fresh interpretation on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the chance to be incredibly popular.
