The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial product as part of an individual collection showcasing causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
The founder indicated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
