The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
