'Our Mission Consists of Exclusively Killing' - The Way The Sudanese Ruthless Militia Perpetrated a Massacre
Caution: This Report Includes Graphic Descriptions of Killings.
Combatants chuckle as they move on the back of a transport truck, speeding past a row of multiple corpses and driving facing the descending Sudanese evening sky.
"See all this effort. Observe this instance of genocide," one cheers.
The fighter beams as he directs the camera on his person and his fellow combatants, their Rapid Support Forces insignia visible: "The victims are all going to die in this manner."
The men are exulting in a mass killing that humanitarian officials believe claimed the lives of in excess of two thousand civilians in the Sudanese urban center of al-Fashir last month.
A City Isolated from the Outside
Following their control of the city under siege for approximately two years, from the summer the RSF advanced to consolidate its dominance and prevent access for the leftover inhabitants.
Space-based imagery show that forces began to erect a immense sand wall - a elevated dirt embankment - around the edges of al-Fashir, sealing off entry points and halting humanitarian assistance.
As the siege intensified, multiple people were murdered in an militia attack on a mosque on mid-September, while the international organization said dozens further were slain in unmanned aircraft and heavy weapon bombardments on a refugee settlement in October.
Disturbing Recording Shows Weaponless Civilians Gunned Down
In the early morning on 26 October the militia overwhelmed the remaining army strongholds and captured the main compound in the community, the headquarters of the Army Division, as the military retreated.
Perhaps the most disturbing footage to surface and analysed revealed the results of a atrocity at a campus structure on the western of the community, where dozens lifeless forms were observed scattered throughout the area.
An older man dressed in a white tunic remained by himself surrounded by the bodies. The individual looked to glance as a fighter armed with a weapon walked along the stairs in the direction of the victim. Raising his rifle, the shooter discharged a solitary bullet at the individual, who collapsed to the floor lifeless.
"For what reason is this individual still breathing," a fighter exclaimed. "Execute him."
Space-based imagery taken on late October seemed to verify that killings were also performed on the streets of al-Fashir, based on a report published by the academic research center.
An witness who spoke reported he had seen "multiple of our family members being killed - these individuals were collected in a specific area and everyone eliminated."
RSF Commanders Attempt to Conduct Reputation Management
Following the events that came after the massacre, RSF chief conceded that his fighters had committed "atrocities" and stated the occurrences would be examined.
Included among arrested was following a report recording his killings. Carefully orchestrated and edited footage posted on the paramilitary's official Telegram account show the commander being taken into a cell at a detention facility on the edges of the city.
At the same time, the militia and associated social media accounts started trying to reshape the story.
Updates showing its fighters distributing assistance to residents were disseminated by some individuals, while the militia's media office shared multiple recordings purporting to demonstrate the humane handling of army captives.
In spite of the digital campaign being used by the paramilitary, their conduct in the city have provoked worldwide outrage.
