Forecasters are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Warnings Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
