Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a cherished figure who demystified classical music for millions.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the 1960s and 70s was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him introduce the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
