Over 250 years, Virginia has had 74 governors, each one of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger shattered this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's history.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Concerns and Targeted Criticism

The former US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency operative triumphed with a campaign that focused on everyday expenses and deliberately challenged the former president's agenda rather than the person.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at thirteen. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, earning a degree in French literature. Upon completing her studies, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before pursuing a government work.

“I grew up believing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she told supporters at a rally in coastal Virginia last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she investigated involving drugs, exploiters and money launderers. She served search and arrest warrants, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and focused on anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and abroad.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, faced a decision. Residing on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a national duty, to state involvement because she was right. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which addresses gun violence, and founded a youth group. In 2017, she decided to seek office, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I observed what the president was implementing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my representative repeatedly vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I felt I had to step up. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In Washington, she quickly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of moderate and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for working with colleagues across the aisle and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan representative of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed turned off independents, warning her party against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in swing areas.

Political Alliance

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the left-leaning “squad” of the New York representative.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would step down for a fourth term and would rather campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her campaign centred on themes of civic duty, advocacy for schools and public works and protection of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a vocation rather than a job.

Election Victory

This enabled her to withstand rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that Spanberger is an extremist on civil rights and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who maintained that individual districts should determine whether transgender students can compete in school athletics, portrayed her rival as the contender more misaligned with the mainstream of the state's voters.
