A Veteran Game Director's New Game That Looks Very Different But Builds On Familiar Concepts.

Bruce Straley behind the iconic survival game is crafting a new venture to video games. The upcoming game, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the inaugural effort of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on his previous work prioritizing dynamic AI partners.

Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept

Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a narrative-driven exploration title. The game follows an elderly witch, a protagonist who defies traditional video game heroics. The foundational premise came from a desire to deconstruct the typical hero’s journey.

"Consider a scenario where you were without combat prowess? What if your character was not built for battle? What if you’re a little old lady?" asked the creative lead. "This felt deeply interesting to think about what makes a hero. Being a hero means persevering against obstacles, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Even though the title looks different visually, its most significant advancement builds directly upon the character dynamics developed for The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by a central inquiry: "What if I could make an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive based on player actions?"

The mysterious beast within this adventure is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child which observes and responds in three key stages. To begin with, it exhibits curiosity, resulting in unexpected chaos. Then, it enters a playful state. Finally, it analyzes to understand comprehending the world's rules.

  • As an instance: If the creature sees the witch solving a puzzle, it learns the motion without knowing the purpose.
  • It will then attempt to collect nearby items to see where they go, repeating what it saw.
  • The 'why' is learned solely through accidental success a challenge, teaching through experience.

Where Every Playthrough Differs

This complex system aims to foster a deeply personal experience. Straley stresses that this project will be a contemplative journey of exploration as opposed to a scripted, action-heavy path.

"Whenever I attempted rigid narrative turns into this game, the excitement fell apart," the director noted. "The core appeal between these characters is that you as a player experiences different sparks and narrative compared to my playthrough."

This commitment to organic narrative born from interaction, this upcoming game represents both a continuation and a significant shift from Straley's well-known franchises. The project is presently being built for computer systems.
